Leadership Training

“I truly don’t think leadership is a gift. Calling it a gift is part of the voodoo of leadership. Leadership is accessible to anyone who wants it. It’s a choice; you decide what you want your life to be about and you go after it. It’s not that mystical.”

- Barbara Waugh

This quote describes just one of the beliefs about leadership that informs our approach to improving leadership effectiveness within organizations. Here are some others:

  • Effective leadership is a requirement for team and organization success
  • Effective leadership is consequence of what a leader actually does - their behaviour; research shows which leadership behaviours have a positive impact on results
  • Leadership is an action not a position; anyone can show leadership whatever their role in an organization
  • The ultimate measure of effective leadership is having willing followers

In our experience, certain conditions must be met before effective leadership can take place:

  1. Leaders must know what is expected of them. Be clear about the behaviour’s required from them to be effective;
  2. Leaders must have the competence required to use these behaviours successfully. Acting strategically - a valuable leadership behaviour - requires the ability to think strategically, and this is a skill that can be learned;
  3. Leaders must be motivated to use the behaviours that make a difference to results. Motivation can be intrinsic (highly preferable), or extrinsic to them;
  4. The work environment must support and encourage the use of effective leadership behaviours.

Improve your leaders. How we help:

We work in partnership with clients; we learn their unique business culture and strategic direction and then create the conditions required for effective leadership to take place.

Typically, this involves creating leadership effectiveness programs, training leaders in key leadership skills, ensuring performance management systems support desired leadership behviour's, coaching individual leaders if required and building simple accountability systems to ensure that leaders consistently use the behaviours that will make the biggest difference to results.

A Note from Rob

A leader's time is extremely valuable. You might consider an '80/20' leadership training option that acknowledges this. It ensures that training sessions last no more than three hours, concentrating on the 20% of knowledge and skill that will create 80% of the results you want.

These popular sessions are fast, action packed, extremely practical and cover each of the most important leadership skills to your organization.
