Unique charasteristics of knowledge workers
As a result of his experience, Rob has learned that highly intelligent knowledge workers have some unique characteristics that create both opportunities and challenges. They must be taken into account when engaged in planning or leadership development activities in this sector.
- The strengths knowledge workers have in analytical thinking and attention to detail - so important when solving certain types of technical problems - can become barriers to progress when they need to take a strategic approach to planning for the future;
- A passion for developing technical expertise is common. A similar level of commitment to developing interpersonal and leadership skills is not as common.
- Thoroughly understanding the technical aspects of an issue and prioritizing time to doing so can be very productive... but diminishing returns occur if too much time and energy is placed on this at the expense of understanding and responding to customer needs and wants
